Brume, from nine directions to one mark.

This page is one project, drawn in the studio. The shop has six seats, a low wood counter, and mist on the window in the morning. A cup would fit any café. Six strokes on a counter fit this one.

The brief

  • Name: Brume. Six seats, morning, not a chain.
  • Keep ceramic, mist, and the low counter.
  • Leave out beans, steam curls, a heart in the cup, and a siren.
Nine first logos for Brume: two wordmarks, a letter b, a window, six stools, mist bands, a cup ring, a wiped pane, and a seal.
Round one

Nine first directions

One image. The directions do not share a template. Two of them are the name, the rest are pictures of the shop that are not a coffee cup.

  1. 1
    Fog serif

The name in a soft serif, the color of the window in the morning.

  2. 2
    Horizon

BRUME tracked out. The last stroke of the E keeps going, like a horizon.

  3. 3
    Dew

A lowercase b. The bowl is a ring left by a cold glass, with one drop inside.

  4. 4
    Window

An M of four panes. It went soft and started to read as a bow, so it was not continued.

  5. 5
    Six seats

Six strokes on a bar, the bar running past the last seat. This is the one that was kept.

  6. 6
    Mist

Three bands, and one thin line of early light.

  7. 7
    Glaze

The mouth of a cup, one brush ring, no handle and no steam. The closest to the cliché.

  8. 8
    Wipe

A dark pane, a cloth pulled through it, morning color in the path.

  9. 9
    Seal

A ring, the name along the top, one line of breath across the middle.

Cell 5 was the one

A cup can be any café. Six strokes on a counter can be a six-seat bar. The bar runs past the last seat, which is how the counter actually looks when you stand at the end of it.

The chosen Brume mark: six vertical strokes on a horizontal bar, in oak brown.
Cell 5, kept
The finished Brume logo: six stools on a bar, with the name Brume beside it.
The final

Drawn once more

The same six strokes, with the name set beside them. Nothing else from the grid was mixed in. In the studio this comes down as a PNG and an SVG.

What changed

  • The six strokes stayed, in the same toasted oak. The bar was shortened so the name could sit beside it.
  • The name was added, smaller than the mark, spelled Brume.
  • Beans, steam, and the cup stayed out.
